2008-Mar-20 Modeling Committee Notes

by Rich Signell last modified 2008-03-21 12:35

Attendees:

Rich Signell - USGS
David Stuebe - UMASSD
Nick Wolff - USM
Ru Morrison - UNH
Steve Cousins - UMAINE
Mingshun Jiang - UMASSB
Mike Mickelson - MWRA
Bash Toulany - BIO
Jen Levin - GOMOOS

Summary:

The meeting took place 1:30-3:00 EDT using WebEx web conferencing.

We started off with introductions, welcoming David Stuebe from Chen's group at UMASS Dartmouth.

Nick Wolff posted some guidelines for how to create model metadata for the project on the GOMODP modeling commitee page using the GCMD framework.   This seems like a good strategy, but we need to come up with some better examples of DIF and SERF records that we can follow, as the examples currently linked appear to have been harvested automatically by GCMD, and don't give the expected results.

A demonstration was given of some of the new data sets added to the Model Interoperability Pilot Project:  The latest GOMOOS circulation forecast data, thanks to Steve, a sample Wavewatch III data from Bash, and sample WRF meteorological data from Doug Vandemark at UNH.

We closed with a short discussion of the why it's important to become a GOMODP member.    We decided that UMASS Dartmouth should probably become a member in addition to UMASS Boston (which is already a member), as they have unique capabilities to bring to the table.

Action items:

  • Nick Wolff will work with Steve Cousins to create sample DIF and SERF records for the GOMOOS POM model.
  • Bash Toulany will work with Rich Signell to get the latest WaveWatch 3 model results served from BIO.
  • Committee members who represent institutions that are not on the GOMODP should join by following these instructions on the GOMODP home page.
  • Committee members who have not done so are encouraged to register at http://gomodp.whoi.edu/bin/addname where you can list your modeling and software skills to serve as a resource for others in the region.
  • Rich Signell will work on scheduling the next meeting for late April.
